2005: Eliver and his family left Playa del Carmen. Unfortunately, we have no further information on him or his family. 20033: Eliver and his family are from the southern border of Chiapas, next to Guatemala, where life is only a basic subsistence in their Indian community. Eliver and his family moved to Playa del Carmen, leaving his two younger sisters behind, to find employment. Recently his father left fo the United States to work and his mother continues to work as a maid. His first language is Tzotzil, a Mayan dialect, and now, since beginning the America Maya Preschool in May 2003, he is learning English and Spanish. Eliver joined us in May 2003 as our first student. Although he was 7 years old, he had never been to school. Even public school is beyond his reach, since he does not have a birth certificate which is necessary for him to enroll. He learned to read and write and as you can see in his smile, he knows he is fortunate to have this opportunity. His mother worked two jobs a day to support Eliver and herself in Playa del Carmen and to send money home to her parents in Chiapas to help with the care of her two younger girls.
