Update on Marcos

May 2008: Marcos is completing 2nd grade in a local public school and all his siblings are now attending public school. His family is doing well. He and his family visit Brenda and Jorge regularly and continue to receive medical and educational support from the America Maya foundation.

August 2005: Marcos' mother obtained his birth certificate and was enrolled him in kindergarten at a local public school.

May 2003: Marcos and his family are from San Juan Chamula, Chiapas where life has few opportunities for members of this strong, united and industrious Indian community. They moved to Playa del Carmen to sell their native craft on the beaches and streets of Playa del Carmen, living life day by day.

His first language is Tzotzil, a Mayan dialect, and now, since beginning the America Maya Preschool in May 2003, he is learning English and Spanish.

Through his education, the vision of his future and that of his parent’s have changed to one of continued servitude to illiteracy to one of hope through education.

Marcos was so proud that he is going to school and told his mother that he needed new shorts, a new shirt, new shoes and a new backpack -- the most important item to complete his desired "school image."

His mother said to him how proud she was that he was in school and that he would be able to grow up and be a teacher one day. He replied, "Mom, I don't want to be a teacher. I want to be a doctor!

That desire, coming out of the mouth of this tiny little intelligent and pensive 3 year old, was the result of just 3 months in the America Maya Preschool. For the first time in their lives, this family can dream and actually realize this dream with the help of others.   What a gift to give.  We wish to thank you for supporting these families and students.
